Don started his post high-school higher education at Multnomah College in 1954. 1956 was a year after Portland State Extension Center (PSEC) became Portland State College in 1955 by act of the Oregon Legislature with expanded engineering courses. Don transferred to PSEC in 1955, met his bride to be in 1956, started at Tektronix in July of 1958, and got married in August of 1958. Don is Portland State College Alumni #499. Tektronix picked up all his education costs after he joined the company.

Don initially chose Multnomah on the advice of lifelong friend Bob Wruble, also a long time Tektronix employee and responsible for pushing him to apply for work at Tektronix. Don had hoped to find a starting spot in Test and Calibration while still in school, but at that particular moment there were no openings. Don was offered a job in Finals which he took where after training and some real final assembly work, he was asked to liaison with the Preprod Engineering function on final assembly issues, an area where he soon transferred (a couple of guys in the group in dark little rooms were named Bill Walker and Jerry Shannon, fairly new employees). During one time in the seemingly numerous positions Don had at Tektronix (just couldn't hold a job) he worked a short period for Rich Nute.

This is Don's 1968 Ski-Tek membership card. Note the Authorized (i.e. President) signature is Larry Weiss, one of the founders of Pentrix who came to Tektronix with the acquisition.
