Unique Hardcopy CRT
An associate of the museum brought in a unique CRT. It is similar in design to Tektronix T4611 tube that was used in the 4601, 4602, 4610 and the 4632 hard copy products as seen in these two photos.
Like the T4611, the CRT has a fiber optic faceplate to collimate light from the phosphor that would maximize the print resolution. The 4601 and subsequent printers employed photosensitive dry-silver paper from the 3M corporation to create monochrome hard copy. In this front view of the tube you can see what appears to be color filters so we suspect this CRT was used in some sort of color printer or hardcopy device. This CRT was not designed or used by Tektronix. Please contact the museum if you have information about this CRT. You can also see the mounting posts on the bottom of the tube.
The ceramic body is large so this CRT is long and heavy.
The top side has several labels and informational text.
It was made and sold by Thomas Electronics.
This writing indicates a date of December 22, 2000.
The bottom side shows the three large mounting posts.
It has a relatively simple gun design. The tube probably employed a magnetic deflection yoke.
The ceramic body has all the earmarks of being manufactured by the Tektronix ceramics operation. The ceramics operation was spun off in 1994 from Tektronix as Vispro Corporation, a supplier of LTCC multi-layer ceramic substrates and structural ceramic components. In January of 2000 Kyocera America, Inc. acquired VisPro Corporation. Their press release states "Effective January 12, 2000, VisPro has become a new division of Kyocera America, Inc. The new division's 60 employees will continue to operate out of their Beaverton, Oregon facility."
This reinforces our belief that this funnel was manufactured by Kyocera at the former Tektronix ceramic operation in building 13.
Sept 19, 2025 Update
One of our volunteers found this ad at SPW Industrial. SPW Industrial is a supplier of surplus and pre-owned industrial and medical equipment. This image is from the SPW Industrial website and has been edited to compress the size.
The part number does indeed match. This led our volunteer to search for and find a brochure for the FP5000 made by Sienna. Click on the image to open the PDF.
