After Howard's death in 1987, Tektronix remodeled the lobby of building 50 and the area north of the building to create a Howard Vollum Memorial Garden and pond. This August 21, 1987 issue of TekWeek features the new Howard Vollum Memorial Garden. Click on the image to view a larger resolution PDF.

This TekWeek included a description of the upgrades to the lobby which has been reformatted to fit the web page.

It also included this description of the Memorial Garden which has likewise been reformatted to fit the web page. The design was by Larry Underhill which will be further expanded on below.

The TekWeek also included this additional photo taken from the west of the Memorial Garden. Note that there is still the road directly in front of building 50 and the entrance steps which are obscured by the tree.

A visitor to the museum purchased Larry Underhill's house and found this preliminary drawing of the proposed Howard Vollum Memorial. As he was an engineering student at Portland State University, we traded the drawing for a 20 MHz oscilloscope which he can use in his studies.

This photo is from the April 25, 1987 aerial photo of the campus and shows the area just north of building 50 where the Memorial Garden was planned.

This photo is a current Google satellite view showing the same area with the Memorial Garden and pond. Note that later renovations removed the road directly in front of building 50 and the steps into the building and added a large patio area. To the left of building 50 is the employee's building (was initially a Starbuck) that was added much later.

This photo is a composite of Larry Underhill's preliminary concept drawing and the satellite photo. The central garden and pond area was constructed as proposed. The smaller areas, one to the upper left, one to the right, and one below were not included.
