The museum visited St Francis School in Sherwood for a STEM event for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Volunteers were Dave Brown, Bob Dexter, Gary Johnson, and Kurt Krueger. For each class Gary Johnson gave an overview of the museum and electronic components as we passed various parts and devices through the group. We then divided the class into four groups and rotated them through four exhibits.
Dave Brown demonstrated our Sound and Waves exhibit, starting with the construction of a speaker, listening to sine, square, and triangle wave, and then moving to the guitar for a demonstration of wavelengths and the math behind our Western scale. Finally the students were able to see their voice on the oscilloscope.
Bob Dexter demonstrated our 4052 Graphics Desktop Computer, showing vector graphics and program in Basic. The Instant Art program is always a hit with students creating visual art with their names and other text (STEAM!).
Gary Johnson showed demonstrated our Light and Color exhibit utilizing the flashlights and microscope. He demonstrated additive and subtractive color and then utilized the microscope to look at images on the LCD screen, printed books and magazines, and electronic components. This always ends with students looking at the texture of their clothes and hair.
Kurt Krueger demonstrated our Computer Algorithm / Digitization exhibit showing the students how a computer can convert an analog signal into a digital number. He also exhibited our Take-Apart-Scope showing the various sub-assemblies and components that make up an instrument.
Feedback from the school was "The students really enjoyed this" and "This was the best they had ever seen". This is a clip from their weekly newsletter which shows Gary Johnson and students exploring hair.
